Jayden Quaintance to Attend University of Kentucky in 2025

Jayden Quaintance, the 6-foot-9 forward who spent his freshman year making waves at Arizona State, has officially committed to play for the University of Kentucky in the 2025-26 season. This marks a return to familiar ground for Quaintance, who originally pledged to the Wildcats before taking a detour to the Big 12 following a coaching change in Lexington.

Now, with a year of college experience and accolades under his belt, the Cleveland native is headed back to the programme he once called home – this time under new head coach Mark Pope. The announcement, confirmed by Kentucky and Quaintance’s family, signals a major win for the Wildcats. It also completes a full-circle journey for the teenager, who spent the past season proving himself as one of the most impactful young players in the country with Arizona State.

At only 17 years old  (He turns 18 this summer), Quaintance is already being projected as a top-five pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. His youth has been a constant point of intrigue, yet it hasn’t stopped him from competing and excelling at the highest level of college basketball. Despite being the youngest player on Arizona State’s roster, he quickly became one of the team’s most valuable contributors.

In 24 games for the Sun Devils, all of which he started, Jayden Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting an efficient 52.5% from the field. He set Arizona State freshman records for total blocks (63) and rebounds per game, recorded six double-doubles, and led the team in blocks in 19 contests. His efforts earned him a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team, a rare double honour achieved by just five players in the conference’s history. Notably, all four previous players who accomplished this feat were first-round NBA Draft picks the following year.

He also made the midseason Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watch List, a testament to his disruptive presence in the paint, and became the only player in the country to tally a combined 90 blocks and steals in fewer than 25 games.

While his stats alone speak volumes, what sets Quaintance apart is how quickly he has climbed the basketball ladder. As a high schooler, he played in the Overtime Elite league, averaging 17.3 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. He reclassified from the class of 2025 to 2024, playing against older competition and thriving. On the Nike EYBL circuit in 2023, he averaged 9.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. He also helped Team USA to a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, further strengthening his case as a top-tier prospect.

Quaintance was a consensus five-star recruit out of high school and earned McDonald’s All-American honours before committing to Kentucky the first time around. Following Coach Calipari’s departure for Arkansas, Quaintance chose to pivot to Arizona State. That decision gave him the chance to prove himself immediately, and now he returns to Kentucky with experience, momentum, and sky-high expectations.

Kentucky wasn’t short of competition for Quaintance’s signature. Powerhouse programmes like Kansas and USC vied for his commitment, along with Auburn and Ohio State. But the appeal of Kentucky, a programme steeped in history and freshly re-energised by Mark Pope’s vision, proved irresistible.

For Big Blue Nation, Quaintance represents more than just a high-level recruit. He’s a sign of Kentucky’s continued commitment to bringing in elite talent. And for Quaintance, this move represents the next step in a basketball journey that has taken him from elite prep leagues to the national stage, with the NBA now firmly in sight.

With NBA scouts already watching closely, Quaintance prepares for his second year of college basketball as one of the most intriguing prospects in college basketball, and all eyes will be on Lexington. And if his freshman year was any indication, Jayden Quaintance is only getting started.
